Rookie defender
Mikhel Poldma scored the only goal of the game to give the York University Lions men's hockey team a 1-0 victory against the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday (Nov. 8) in Waterloo, Ont.
The first two periods ended in a scoreless deadlock between the two teams. The Lions pressured the home team with a combined shot tally of 24 to the Warrior's 14 over the two periods.
Poldma (North York, Ont.) broke the tie at 8:33 of the final period with the support of
Calvin Higley (Aurora, Ont.) and
Jeremie Perron (Calgary). The goal marked Poldma's first of his career with the Lions.
With less than one minute left, the Warriors pulled their goalie for the extra attacker as the team looked to capitalize on a last minute power play. However, the Lions were able to fend off the pressure and take the win.
Both goaltenders were kept busy throughout the game.
Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) made 27 saves while counterpart Mike Morrison made 30.
The Lions improved to a record of 4-6 in the OUA West standings. Their next opponent is the RMC Paladins on Friday (Nov. 14) in Canlan Ice Sports at 7pm.
