Box Score The York University Lions women's volleyball team defeated the Nipissing Lakers 3-0 on Saturday (Nov. 8) in Nipissing, Ont., to get back into the win column after suffering their first defeat last weekend.
 
The Lions won the first set 25-22, the second 25-10 and the third 25-12. The victory was their fourth of the year and brings them to 4-1 on the season to stay near the top of the tight OUA East standings.
 
The Lakers started strong in the first set with a kill by Tracy Hammerton. The Lions fell behind due to a series of errors, but Aleks Arsovic (Burlington, Ont.) made four consecutive kills to even out the game. With the set tied a 21-21, kills by Arsovic, Michelle Pierce (Windsor, Ont.) and Ventea Mincheva (Gatineau, Que.) staked the Lions to the three-point win.
 
The second set started off strong with alternating kills from both teams. With five kills in a row for the Lions – three by Brittney Hopley (Thornhill, Ont.) and two by Cadence Currie (Winnipeg) – the Lions dominated their opponents, only allowing them to score 10 points.
 
After a great victory in the first two sets, the Lions began with confidence in third set only allowing the Lakers to score 12 points. The Lions made many brilliant kills from Arsovic, Hopley, Currie, Mincheva and Pierce.
 
The Lions played an exceptional game, especially leaders Arsovic with 11 kills Hopley with nine kills, one ace and four blocks, Currie with eight kills and Mincheva with eight kills, two aces and one block.
 
Leaders from the Lakers included Lindsay VanderweideChristina Caruso, Hammerton, Brittany Ardron and Victoria Taylor with two kills each.
 
The next game for the Lions is this coming Saturday (Nov. 15) against the Ryerson Rams in the Tait McKenzie Centre at 2pm. The Lions will be looking to hand the undefeated Rams their first loss of the year.
