GOLDEN HAWKS BLANK LIONS IN WATERLOO

Box Score The York University Lions women's hockey team was unable to stop a rampant Laurier Golden Hawks squad in a 6-0 loss on Friday (Jan. 9) in Waterloo, Ont.

Neither team was able to score on the first period, although the Lions were able to take nine shots to challenge Golden Hawks goalie Amanda Smith.

The Golden Hawks broke the deadlock with three goals within two minutes mid way through the second period. At 9:17, Blair Connelly scored to give the team a lead with assists by Megan Howe and Erika Kiviaho. Dollee Meigs doubled the lead through a Catie Thomson assist at 10:07. Howe scored the third goal assisted by Connelly and Tammy Freiburger at 10:53.

Just a minute before the second intermission, Jessie Hurrell settled the home team's insurmountable lead with the support of Heather Platt, and Laurier led 4-0 after two periods.

The Lions pulled goalie Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) early in the final frame, giving a chance for the opposition to score two empty-net goals through Freiburger at 7:32 and 18:41.

Lee managed 19 saves while her counterpart, Smith, made 31.

The loss dropped the Lions to 7-6-2 on the year, and they are seventh in the OUA standings with 16 points. Laurier improved to 8-4-3 with the win and sits fifth with 19 points.

The Lions will still be playing on the road for a match against the Waterloo Warriors in their next contest. The Warriors will be playing their first game of the winter term. A win for the Lions would snap the Warriors' five-game winning streak. The match will be played in Waterloo on Sunday (Jan. 11) at 2:30pm.
