The York University Lions men's volleyball team was defeated by the Queen's Gaels in straight sets in their Sunday afternoon (Jan. 11) match in Kingston, Ont.

The Gaels won the first set 25-12, the second 26-24 and the third 26-24.

In the first set the Lions delivered seven kills with the help of leading attackers
Josh Henderson (Scarborough, Ont.) and
Arthur Swarcz (Toronto). The Gaels pushed the Lions to commit eight errors, which helped the Gaels come out with 13 more points than the Lions to win the set. The home team made a total of 10 kills in the set.

In the second set the Lions managed to finish with more kills than the Gaels (15-14), but due to seven errors the Lions fells short and missed the win by only two points.

The final set was an intense battle where both teams constantly tied the score. The Lions nailed 15 kills on the Gaels and the Gaels nailed 16 on the Lions. Leading the final attack of the Lions were
Ray Szeto (Sutton, Ont.) and
Alexander Duncan-Thibault (Scarborough, Ont.), while the Gaels' attack was led by Philippe Goyer and Mike Tomlinson. Due to two final errors from the Lions, the Gaels were able to triumph and win the set 26-24.

Leading players of the game for the Lions were Szeto with 17 points, scored all on kills, and Henderson with 11 kills, one service ace and an assisted block for 11.5 points.

Goyer was the Gaels' leader with 14.5 points on 13 kills, one service ace and an assisted block, while Tomlinson finished with 10 kills, one service ace and three blocks for 14 points.

With the loss, the Lions fell to sixth place in the OUA standings with a record of 7-5, while the Gaels moved up to a tie for third place with the Guelph Gyrphons at 8-4.

The next game for the Lions is a home game on Saturday (Jan. 17) against the Waterloo Warriors at the Tait McKenzie Centre at 1pm.
