The York University Lions women's volleyball team lost in straight sets against the No. 3 nationally-ranked Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday (Jan. 30) at the Goldring Centre in Toronto.

The Lions are currently fifth place in the OUA East standings with a record of 9-7 and 18 points, while Toronto remains in first place with 32 points as they look to end the season with a perfect record.

The Blues won the first set in a tight match that ended at 25-21. The home team swept the Lions in the following sets with a score of 25-15 in both sets.Â

Madelyn Mandryk made 31 assists for the Blues. Charlotte Sider led all players with 18 points on 14 kills and four service aces.

Brittney Hopley (Thornhill, Ont.) recorded 14 points at the end of the game with eight kills, five blocks and a service ace.
Michelle Pierce (Windsor, Ont.) also made eight kills for eight points. Rookie outside hitter
Veneta Mincheva (Gatineau, Que.) had nine points, three of which came from service aces.

The Lions will be facing the cross-town rival Ryerson Rams at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto on Saturday (Jan. 31) beginning at 6pm in their next match. They need a win to stay alive in the OUA East playoff race.
