Adding another win to their record and climbing up to the top of the OUA West standings, the York University men's soccer team came away with a 2-1 defeat against the Waterloo Warriors Saturday (Oct. 10) at York Stadium.
The Lions started the game strong tallying 19 shots in the first 45 minutes alone. However, Waterloo's Jae Jin Loe was able to execute off of his team's second chance of the half in the 10
th minute. Running towards the Lions net off of a counterattack, Loe squeezed the ball past the fingers of
Colm Vance (Bradford, Ont.) and the Lions were down 1-0.
The Warriors lead didn't last long however thanks to
Michael Cox's (Calgary, Alta.) brilliant finish in the 43
rd minute. Meeting the ball from a pass over the top of Warriors backline, Cox maintained his composure and struck the ball past Waterloo's keeper which put the Lions back in the contest.
Leveled at the half, the Lions came out hungry to gain the lead, putting overwhelming pressure on the Waterloo's defensive line. Eventually their efforts paid off in the 66
th minute when
Joey Cicchillo (North York, Ont.) finished off
Jonathan Lao's (Unionville, Ont.) delivery into the technical area and convincingly headed the ball between the bars.
Next up for the men's side is another Warriors match-up that will be played on Friday (Oct. 16
) in Waterloo. The game is set for 8:15 pm.
