The York University Lions men's hockey team rounded out another a win on the road against the UOIT Ridgebacks on Saturday evening (Oct. 17) with a 5-2 victory in Oshawa, Ont.
Â
The high scoring game found the Lions successful in the offensive end. They outshot the Ridgebacks 34-26 and capitalized on four of their nine power play opportunities.
Â
The first goal came at 15:49 of the game when fourth-year defender
Tyler Mort (Keswick, Ont.) was able to execute from
Shayne Rover (Newmarket, Ont.) and
Mark Cross (Strasbourg, Sask.) assists. Driving the puck past the gloves of the Ridgeback goaltender, Mort gave the team a 1-0 lead to close off the first period.
Â
Coming into the second period, UOIT was determined to narrow the score and got their own power play goal at 6:33 from Loren Ulett, but the Lions were quick to regain their lead. Thanks to the assistance of
Colton Vannucci (High River, Alta.) and
Kyle Campbell (Halifax), York's second-year forward
Greg Milner (Watford, Ont.) was able to give his team the lead again with a goal at 10:25 to put the Lions up 2-1.
Â
Leading into the third period, the Lions came out hungry as ever as the goals continued to come. Just 2:24 in, the first goal's threesome was back at it with Rover adding another tally to the scoreboard with help from Mort and Cross.
Â
Then midway through the period the Lions put the game to rest with back-to-back goals one minute apart with eight minutes to go in the game. Fifth-year forward
Tyler McGee (Timmons, Ont.) and freshman
Nicholas Geiser increased the damage to 5-1 with assists from Cross, Mort and
Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.)
Â
The Ridgebacks were able to squeeze in another goal before the final whistle, but it didn't stop the Lions from adding another win to their 2-0-1 record on the year.
Â
In the upcoming week, the Lions will prepare to host the Laurentian Voyagers at home. Puck drop will be at 7pm on Friday (Oct. 23) at Canlan Ice Sports.
