LIONS FINISH THIRD AFTER 0-2-1 MARK ON FINAL WEEKEND

The York University Lions field hockey team faced off against three OUA rivals over the weekend (Oct. 24-25) in Kingston, Ont., and came away with a 0-2-1 record.

The Lions finished their season with a record of 5-5-2, their best under head coach Zeeshan Minhas, and in third place in the OUA standings with 17 points.

The first match was played on Saturday, when the Lions took on cross-town rival the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at Queen's University, The Lions fell by a score of 5-0. Tegan Stairs and Amanda Woodcroft of the Blues both scored twice to propel their team over the Lions.

On Sunday the Lions played a doubleheader where they squared off against the McGill Martlets in the morning and the Guelph Gryphons in the afternoon. In the first game against the Martlets the two sides couldn't manage to find the back of the net in regulation, resulting in the Lions second draw of the season.

In the final game on Sunday the Lions fell to the eventual first-place Gryphons by a score of 3-1. The Lions played solid defensively as they only allowed one goal in the first half, scored by Olivia Lane in the 30th minute.

In the second half the Gryphons extended their lead to two goals when Allison Chute beat York goalkeeper Shanelle Fernando (Markham, Ont.) at the 63-minute mark. Five minutes after the Chute goal the Lions came storming back.

Ravneet Kalkat (Mississauga, Ont.) led the charge and cut the Gryphon lead in half, scoring her third goal of the season. Unfortunately, this was as close as the Lions would come as the Gryphons added their third goal of the game just two minutes after the Kalkat score.

The Lions leading scorer this season was Michelle Per (Port Moody, B.C.), who finshed the 2015 season with a total of four goals.

With their third-place finish the Lions have advanced to the OUA Final Four Championships next weekend at the University of Toronto and will face the host Varsity Blues in the semifinals at 2pm on Friday (Oct. 30). The winner of the game will advance to the gold-medal final the other day and will also earn a berth in the CIS championships.
