The York University Lions women's soccer team capped off its 2015 season with an 11-0 win over the Algoma Thunderbirds on Sunday (Oct. 25) at York Stadium.
Â
The Lions were coming off a 10-0 win over the Thurnderbirds the previous day and the momentum carried over to Sunday, as they scored five goals in the first half and another six in the second to round out the scoring.
Colleen Beesley (Richmond Hill, Ont.), playing in her final regular season home game, netted five goals, including each of the last four, while
Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.) scored a hat trick and finished as the OUA's leading scorer with 18 goals in 16 games.
Â
Only five minutes in,
Sydney Hoareau (Brampton, Ont.) broke into the box after evading multiple defenders and booted her fifth goal of the season and second in as many days, giving the Lions an early 1-0 lead.
Â
The Lions were relentless in their attack on Sunday as the Lions dominated the possession of the ball. Ghoniem broke through the Thunderbird defence and beat sprawling Algoma goalkeeper Enya Farelly, which put the Lions up 2-0. Â
Â
Ghoneim was on the attack once again, this time around she was gifted with a beautiful through ball from
Magda Blakeson (West Dummerston, Vermont) that Ghoniem sent into the far corner of the cage at the 19
th minute.
Â
One minute later, Beesley continued the scoring trend as she potted her sixth of the season, adding to the Lions first half lead, 4-0.
Â
In the 22
nd minute of the first half, Ghoniem completed her hat trick as she was sprung on a partial breakaway and lifted the ball over the charging Farelly.
Â
As the teams took the pitch for the second half the Lions continued their attack.
Jessie Wootton (King City, Ont.) led the Lions deep into Thunderbird territory and at the 54
th minute she produced the sixth score of Saturday's match for a 6-0 lead.
Â
Under two minutes later
Farkhunda Muhtaj (Toronto) scored her first goal of the season in the 56
th minute with a world class strike from distance that rattled the back of the net. Soon after the Muhtaj strike Beesley managed to weave through a pack of Thunderbirds and extended the Lions lead to 8-0.
Â
Beesley accomplished the five-goal achievement in the 87
th, 88
th and 90
th minutes which doubled her entire season total of goals scored. She was a one-woman wrecking crew as all three goals were scored within under a minute of each other, and she ended the season with 10 goals.
Â
The Lions finished the regular season atop the OUA West Division for the first time since 2009 with a 15-0-1 record and will look to carry that dominance into the post-season, which begins next week. The Lions will host an OUA quarter-final match on Sunday (Nov. 1) at 1pm against the lowest remaining seed after Wednesday's first round.
