The York University Lions men's hockey team attempted a late comeback but it wasn't enough on Friday night (Oct. 30) as the squad fell to the Ryerson Rams by a score of 6-4 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Â
The game began with quick Ryerson goal just over a minute in from Michael Fine, which was followed by another Rams goal from Keevin Cutting.
Â
The Lions were held scoreless in the first, but in the second period after the Rams tallied another goal extending their lead to three,
Trevor Petersen (Thornhill, Ont.)Â scored his first of two power play goals on the night with assists going to
Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.) and
Colton Vannucci (High River, Alta.).
Â
Soon after the Peterson goal, Cutting scored his second of the game beating Lion goaltender
Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) and giving the Rams a 4-1 lead heading into the third period.
Â
The final frame began similar to the other two as the Rams scored an early goal, this time the scorer was Lucas Froese. The fifth goal from the Rams seemed to awaken the Lions, however, as they busted back with another power play goal from Petersen, once again with Sheppard and Vannucci picking up the assists.
Â
After the Lions were rewarded with their third odd-man advantage, Petersen and
Justin Larson (Buckhorn, Ont.) set up
Greg Milner (Watford, Ont.) closing the gap to two. Just over two minutes after Milner scored his first he added another to bring the Lions within one goal with seven minutes remaining in the third period. Â
Â
The comeback would fall short, however, as Ryerson added an empty netter to round out the scoring and take the victory.
Â
The Lions are back home Halloween night (Oct. 31) when they take on the other Toronto team in the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at 7pm at Canlan Ice Sports.
