In a matchup of nationally ranked teams, the No. 10 York University Lions men's volleyball team was shutout by the No. 1 McMaster Marauders 3-0 on Saturday night (Oct. 31) in Hamilton, Ont.
Â
The Marauders (4-0) currently hold the top spot in the OUA and have consistently sat near the top of the CIS rankings in the past four years, so the Lions had a lot of work to do in order to squeeze out a win.
Â
The Lions came close to securing a win in the second set, executing off eight kills, forcing eight errors in the opponent's end and outnumbering the Marauders in attacks (30-26). However, the Marauders were able to come away with a close 25-22 win to round out the set.
Â
The Marauders also took the first and third sets 25-15 and 25-17.
Â
The Lions produced some solid individual performances.
Arthur Szwarc (Toronto) led the team with 11 points on five kills, five solo blocks and one service ace, while
Alexander Duncan-Thibault (Scarborough, Ont.) and
Nicolas Pirnat (Ottawa) had six points apiece.
Â
Logan Mend (Naramata B.C) finished with a team-high 17 assists and also led all Lions with four digs.
Â
The Lions will look to get back into the win column next weekend when they host the RMC Paladins (0-3) on Friday (Nov. 6) beginning at 8pm.
