The No. 3 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's soccer team defeated the Guelph Gryphons by a score of 2-0 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 4).
 
 The Lions started strong off the whistle, scoring their first goal of the game in the first four minutes. Launching the ball down the field, the Lions rushed the field but it was striker Jarek Whiteman (Brampton, Ont.) who pounced off of Guelph keeper Taylor Braden's fumble of the ball and placed the ball in the back of the net.
 
The first half continued to be an eventful one as the Lions created more chances in the final third. Matt Arnone (Woodbridge, Ont.) almost scored a screamer of a goal in the 34^th minute that was just wide of the target, and Jonathan Lao (Unionville, Ont.) was denied only by the crossbar from a set piece in the 36^th minute.
 
The second half saw more action by the Lions starting early in the 46^th minute when Whiteman was back in technical area, hungry for another goal. Doing well to stay on his feet, he shielded the ball from four Gryphons before nailing the crossbar. Luckily Michael Cox (Calgary) wasn't far off and was able to finish off the rebound to put the team up 2-0 to end the game.  
 
The win improved the team's record to 7-1-2 on the year and the Lions are currently in third place in the OUA West Division standings with a game in hand over each of the top two teams, Windsor and McMaster.
 
They will look to add another win to their record when they finally return home on Thursday (Oct. 8) against the Laurier Golden Hawks. Kick-off will be at 8:15pm for the first time in the newly-built York Lions Stadium.
