The No. 4 nationally-ranked York University Lions women's soccer team added another win to its unbeaten record this season with a 2-0 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 4).
Â
With the win, the Lions hold an OUA-best 9-0-1 record and are now the only team in the OUA West Division with an undefeated record on the season.
Â
Opening the game with clinical possessive play that kept the Gryphons chasing, the Lions were dominant in every area of the pitch. The creativity paid off in the 20
th minute when
Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.) released
Sarah Wong (Scarborough, Ont.) into the technical area to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead. Ghoneim flicked the ball into the path of Wong's darting run past the Gryphons' back four, which gave Wong enough time to tuck the ball into the near post.
Â
The Lions were also close to adding another goal to the scoreboard in the 40
th minute when
Charlene D'Mello (Brampton, Ont.) rang the crossbar off of a long shot on goal to end the half off strong.
Â
Heading into the second half, the Lions continued to find success going forward and were able to grab their second goal of the game in the 63
rd minute. Thanks to the patience and dribbling ability of
Shannon Wood (Brampton, Ont.), Ghoniem found herself on the end Wood's pass and nailed the ball into the back of the net.
Â
The Lions finished the game with 13 shots as opposed to the Gryphons, who only tallied one shot off.
Â
Next up, the Lions will be back on home turf to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks on Thursday (Oct. 8) in another nationally-ranked match-up. The game will be played at the brand new York Lions Stadium, marking the first ever York event in the facility. Kick-off is set for 6pm.
