Mihkel Poldma scored 2:26 into the extra frame to lead the York University Lions men's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the Windsor Lancers at Canlan Ice Sports on Saturday night (Nov. 14).
Â
The goal was the first of the season for Poldma (North York, Ont.) and was assisted by
Reid Jackman (Etobicoke, Ont.).
Â
The two points in the standings give the Lions 17 on the year as they improved to 7-1-3 and gave themselves a three-point cushion over the Lancers, who sit third in the OUA West at 6-4-2. The Lions have now played in four straight overtime games and five overall in their first 11 contests.
Â
The game got off to a fast start with a goal by the Lancers just 1:42 into the first period, a short-handed tally by Justice Dundas after
Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.) took an interference penalty only 48 seconds in.
Â
Sheppard made up for his earlier mistake midway through the frame when he found the back of the net to level the score at 1-1. It was his seventh goal of the year and extended his point streak to seven games.
Â
It appeared as though it would be a high-scoring affair after that start, but both goaltenders settled in after that and turned away every shot they faced until Poldma's tally in the first overtime period. York netminder
Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) finished with 22 saves, while his counterpart, Michael Doan, had 33.
Â
The Lions will continue their four-game homestand next Friday night (Nov. 20) when they host the Waterloo Warriors at Canlan Ice Sports in a game beginning at 7pm.
