The York University Lions men's volleyball team was defeated in four sets by the Nipissing Lakers at the Robert J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre in North Bay, Ont., on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 14).

The first set saw both teams battling back and forth to take the win, however it was the Lakers that were able to pull through and squeeze out a close 25-23 victory.

In the second set the Lions were able to keep a steady lead throughout the course of action and ended up taking the set 25-20.

With a 1-1 tie heading into the third set, both teams fought hard to gain the lead.

The Lions carried their momentum into the set and kills by
Arthur Szwarc (Toronto),
Toure Nwakwesi (Brampton, Ont.), and
Tyler Covach (Kitchener, Ont.) in the early stages of action gave their team the edge. However, the Lakers forced a sequence of errors for the Lions midway through the set and the Lakers ended up winning 25-19.

The fourth set saw glimmers of hope for the Lions, picking up a 20-15 lead towards the end of action. However several attack errors on the Lions' end enabled the Lakers to recover and finish the set with a 25-22 win that secured them the victory.

Notable performances from the Lions included Szwarc, who led the team with 18.5 points on 16 kills, two service aces and an assisted block, and Covach with 15 points on 13 kills and two service aces.

Lyndon Sonego led the Lakers in scoring with 17 points on 14 kills, two service aces and one block.

Tonight the Lions will hurry home and prepare for their next game against the Guelph Gryphons that will begin at 4pm on Sunday (Nov. 14) at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
