The York University Lions women's hockey team was defeated by a 3-2 score in double overtime by the Windsor Lancers on the road in Windsor, Ont., on Friday night (Nov. 13).
Â
The critical overtime goal came from Lancers Natalie Barrette off of a power play with just 32 seconds remaining before the shootout. The assists were awarded Erinn Noseworthy and Shawna Lesperance.
Â
After a scoreless first, the Lions opened the scoring at 2:47 in the second period with a goal from
Renata Bastos Gottgtroy (Auckland, New Zealand). After receiving a pass from a linkup between
Erran Lee (Madoc, Ont.) and
Raeanna Kelly (Cut Knife, Sask.), Bastos Gottgtroy was able to slip the puck into the net.
Â
Before the end of the period at 14:39, Jillian Rops tied up the game off of assists from Hillary Hettwer and Larissa Borowiec and the score stayed at 1-1 heading into the final frame.
Â
Then carrying their momentum into the third period the Lancers edged out a 2-1 lead just 71 seconds in. Krystin Lawrence executed off of a pass from teammate Noseworthy and the Lancers fought to hold the lead.
Â
The Lions were able to break through the Lancers defensive lines, however, and at 13:56 they equalized the score thanks to the same line that had gotten on the scoresheet earlier. This time, it was Kelly finding the back of the net with assists to Bastos Gottgtroy and Lee.
Â
Neither team could find the winner before the end of regulation, however, and Barrette gave her team it's first victory of the season at the end of double overtime. The Lancers are now 0-5-1-1 on the year but remain at the bottom of the OUA standings, while the Lions dropped to 1-5-1-1 and currently sit 11
