The York University Lions women's basketball team dropped a nail-biting 61-59 decision to the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday evening (Nov. 14) in Sudbury, Ont.
Â
The Lions trailed 17-9 after the first quarter of play but they came storming back in the second, outscoring their opponents 21-7 to take a 30-24 lead into the break. They continued to pad their lead in the third quarter and led by as many as nine points mid-way through the frame, but after that point Laurentian started chipping away at the deficit and erased it completely with 1:12 left in the quarter when they took a 46-45 lead. The Lions scored six unanswered points, however, and led 51-46 after three quarters.
Â
The two teams struggled to score early in the fourth quarter, and with 6:41 left the Lions led by six. However, the Voyageurs put in a series of baskets to again close the deficit, and they took the lead for good with 56 seconds remaining.
Â
Katrina Collins-Samuels (Hamilton, Ont.) had the best game of her young career, pouring in 21 points and added four rebounds and three assists to lead the Lions. She was the only player to reach double digits in scoring.
Â
On the defensive end,
Shauney Fischer (Wallaceburg, Ont.) was solid with 10 rebounds to go along with six points.
Â
Laurentian featured a more balanced scoring attack with three players scoring at least 11 points, led by Adrienne Moreau, who put in 13 and added six rebounds.
Â
The Lions will make their home debut in their next contest on Friday night (Nov. 20) when they welcome the Brock Badgers to the Tait McKenzie Centre for a game that will begin at 6pm.
