The York University Lions women's basketball team won its second consecutive game on Saturday (Nov. 28) as they defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks by a score of 77-65 in Waterloo, Ont.
Â
Taylor McAlpine (Huntsville, Ont.) had an incredible performance off of the bench on Saturday that fueled the Lions offence to the upset over the Golden Hawks. McAlpine finished the game with a perfect field goal percentage (8-8) to lead all Lions in scoring with 20 points to go with 12 rebounds.
Â
The Lions' bench accounted for 45 of the Lions' 77 total points, compared to the Golden Hawks' bench that only totalled nine points.
Â
Katrina Collins-Samuels (Hamilton, Ont.) was another key contributor off the bench for the Lions as she finished the game with a near double-double of 11 points and seven rebounds.
Â
In the first quarter the Lions were outscored 16-13 and trailed going into the second, but the lack of scoring would be reversed, as the Lions fed off of the offensive spark coming from the bench and put up 25 points in the frame to take a six-point lead into halftime at 38-32.
Â
The Lions' momentum from the first half carried over to the second as they continued their dominant shooting performance, which helped them outscore the Golden Hawks in the final two quarters 39-33 for the big 12-point victory.
Â
Ishanaa Seupersadsingh (Markham, Ont.) was a dominant force as she filled the stat sheet, finishing with 12 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Â
With back-to-back wins, the Lions improved their record on the season to 2-5. They are now off for the holiday break and will look to extend their win streak in the new year when they travel downtown on Friday, Jan. 8 to face off against the 2-4 Toronto Varsity Blues at 11am.
