The York University Lions men's hockey team dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Carleton Ravens on Saturday night (Nov. 7) in Ottawa despite numerous penalties to the home team.
Â
In one stretch from the 12:21 mark of the second period to 8:42 in the third, the Ravens were called for 12 infractions for 35 penalty minutes, giving the Lions plenty of 5-on-3 opportunities. The Lions did their best to capitalize, scoring twice on the power play in that stretch and three times overall, but after trailing 3-1 the Ravens came all the way back to tie it and then won with 31 seconds remaining in the second overtime period on a goal by Corey Durocher.
Â
The Lions got on the board first as time wound down on the first period on a power play goal by
Kyle Campbell (Halifax) at 18:59 for a 1-0 lead after the first period.
Â
Michael McNamee evened the score at 7:26 in the second before the parade to the penalty box started.
Justin Larson (Buckhorn, Ont.) rifled a beautiful shot into the net at 15:02 for a 2-1 York advantage, and two-and-a-half minutes later
Trevor Petersen (Thornhill, Ont.) made no mistake from right in front of the net to extend the lead to 3-1 heading into the final frame.
Â
Throughout the extended power play Carleton goaltender Francis Dupuis made numerous remarkable saves and finished the game with 38 on 41 shots faced.
Â
Ryan Van Stralen and Brett Gustavsen were the Ravens goal scorers in the third period that leveled the game before the overtime began.
Â
Despite the loss, the Lions have earned points in eight of nine games this season and, at 6-1-2, are tied for first place in the OUA West with the Western Mustangs. They will now be home for four straight games over the next two weekends, beginning with a game against the defending OUA champion Guelph Gryphons on Friday night (Nov. 13) beginning at 7pm at Canlan Ice Sports.
