The York University Lions men's volleyball team conquered the No. 10 nationally-ranked Ryerson Rams in five sets on Saturday (Jan. 31) at the Coca-Cola Courts in Toronto.

The first set was an intense one where the Lions were finally able to pull out over the Rams at 30-28. The Rams responded in the second set by pushing through at 25-15. The Rams continued to counter attack the Lions as both teams held 14 kills and four errors. The Rams won the third set 25-22 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Lions turned their luck around in the fourth as they won 25-17, and in the fifth set the Lions barely squeezed through with a 15-13 win to seal the upset victory.

Ray Szeto (Sutton, Ont.) played an outstanding game as he surpassed every player in points, with 25. Szeto completed 23 kills, one service ace and one block, and added four digs.

Following behind Szeto was
Alexander Duncan-Thibault (Scarborough, Ont.) with a total of 15 points from 11 kills and four blocks and
Arthur Swarcz (Toronto) with 11 points from seven kills and four blocks.

Marko Dakic (Mississauga, Ont.) held the most digs (10) and
Nikola Sandic (Etobicoke, Ont.) completed the most assists (44).

Exceptional players from the Rams included Lucas Coleman with 20 points on 18 kills and two service aces, and Robert Wojcik with 17.5 points from 13 kills, three service aces and 1.5 blocks.

The win gave the Lions an 11-7 record and moved them into a tie for fourth place with the Queen's Gaels with 22 points. The Rams continue to sit tied for second with a 13-5 mark.

The next game for the Lions is a home game on Saturday (Feb. 7) against the Western Mustangs at the Tait McKenzie Centre at 4pm.
