LIONS HOST GAELS IN OUA QUARTER-FINAL ON VALENTINE’S DAY

 The York University Lions men's volleyball team hosts the Queen's Gaels on Saturday afternoon in the OUA quarter-finals.

Last Meetings
 
The Lions and Gaels have played twice this season with Gaels winning both matches in convincing fashion. They first met in November at the Tait McKenzie Centre when the Lions were able to win only one set. In January, the Gaels swept the Lions at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) in Kingston, Ont.
 
The last time these two teams met in the OUA quarter-finals was two season ago, when the Lions beat the Gaels in a five set thriller at the ARC, 23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-16, 18-16. Ray Szeto (Sutton, Ont.) led the attack with 26.5 points, on 24 kills.

  • Currently playing their best volleyball of the season, winning five games in a row, which is the longest current streak in the OUA, aside from No. 1 McMaster's 19-game streak.

  • The Lions boast two of the top four total point getters in the OUA in Szeto and rookie Josh Henderson (Scarborough, Ont.). Szeto is second with 313.5, while Henderson is fourth with 291.

Queen's
  • Beat Guelph on the last day of the regular season to snap their three-game losing streak, which tied their longest since starting the season with three consecutive losses. Their most recent slide included dropping matches to Western, Windsor and McMaster.
  • After losing their first three games of the season, the Gaels went 11-2, but finished the season 1-3, which allowed the Lions to leapfrog them for fourth place in the conference. 
  • The Gaels are tops in the OUA with 11.25 digs per set, ranks third best in service aces with 107 and fifth in total points with 1144.

York
 
OH Ray Szeto – Named all-Canadian and OUA first team all-star in each of the last two seasons. He is the current leader in kills in York history and the only one to surpass 1,000. He is currently fourth in the conference with 3.66 kills per set and fifth with 4.2 points per set.
 
S Nikola Sandic – The current York male athlete of the week. He ranks second in the league with 9.78 assists per set and 743 total assists. He leads the team with 22 service aces, which is eighth in the OUA.
 
Queen's
 
OH Mike Tomlinson – Ranks fourth in the OUA in points per set with 4.3 and fifth in between Szeto and Henderson with 3.31 kills per set.
 
OH Philippe Goyer – Second on the team with 3.5 points per set, which is 12th in the OUA, while his 2.97 kills per set is good for ninth.
