York University Lions women's soccer player
Nour Ghoneim scored the lone goal in the 49
th minute for a season-opening victory over the McMaster Marauders on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 30) in Hamilton, Ont.
Â
The Lions dominated possession in the first half but could not find the back of the net. That changed early in the second, however, when the fourth-year striker from Aurora, Ont., got onto the end of a set piece and directed her header inside the near post and past McMaster goalkeeper Christina Abbatangelo.
Â
York's best chance to score in the first half came in the 39
th minute, when
Francesca Pedulla (Richmond Hill, Ont.) stepped into a long-range effort and hit the ball just over the crossbar.
Â
The Marauders nearly tied the game in the 72
nd minute but Sarah Fettah's long-range effort went over the crossbar.
Â
Sunday's win marks a good start for the Lions as they battle in the OUA West, and they are one of four teams in the division to go undefeated on the opening weekend of play.
Â
The Lions will make their home debut next weekend when they return to York Stadium for a pair of games on Labour Day weekend. Up first is a contest against the 0-2 Brock Badgers, who went winless against Western and Windsor this weekend. Kick-off is set for 1pm on Saturday, Sept. 5.
