LIONS MAKE 2015 HOME DEBUT THIS WEEKEND AGAINST BROCK, WINDSOR

The No. 1 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's soccer team will play its home-opening matches this weekend against the visiting Brock Badgers and Windsor Lancers.

Last Meetings
The Lions swept the Badgers in both contests last year. They opened the season with a 3-0 victory over Brock on home turf on Labour Day Weekend, and scored a 2-1 win in St. Catharines at the end of September. Jonathan Lao scored three of the four goals for the Lions.
 
The Lions also won both matches against the Lancers, taking the first 3-0 on the road and the second 4-2 at home. Windsor's two goals marked the only time all season the Lions allowed more than one goal in a game.

  • The Lions opened the 2015 campaign against the rival McMaster Marauders last weekend, posting a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory on a goal by Michael Cox in the 88th minute. The contest was a rematch of last year's OUA and CIS finals.
  • The Lions are ranked No. 1 in the CIS in the first weekly poll of the season. They have been nationally ranked in 42 straight polls dating back to Week 6 in 2010.
  • The Lions have won the OUA West Division eight straight times and have won medals at the OUA championships in seven of the last eight seasons. Last year they finished the season with a goal differential of +52, by far the best in the OUA.
  • The Lions haven't lost a match to an OUA opponent since a 1-0 defeat to the Marauders on Oct. 5, 2013. The streak has stretched 28 games and a 25-0-3 mark.
 
Brock
  • Brock opened the season with a 1-0 upset victory over Western. Arsen Platis scored on a penalty kick in the 64th minute. The next day, the Badgers were defeated 3-0 by the Lancers.
  • The Badgers finished seventh in the OUA West last year with a 1-9-6 record and nine points. They were nine points behind the sixth-place Laurier Golden Hawks.
 
Windsor
  • The Lancers were the only team in the OUA West to win their first two matches on opening weekend. They began with a 1-0 victory over the Guelph Gryphons (who finished third in the division last year) on Saturday and followed that up with a 3-0 win over the Badgers on Sunday.
  • The Lancers finished fifth in the OUA West standings last year with a record of 8-7-1 and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Western Mustangs by a score of 1-0.
 
PLAYERS TO WATCH
 
York
 
F Michael Cox – Makes his home debut for the Lions this weekend after an impressive first game for the squad, in which he scored the winning goal in the 88th minute to take down McMaster. He spent three years with Edmonton FC in the NASL and one season in Finland before coming to York.
 
M Jonathan Lao – An OUA all-star and CIS all-Canadian in each of his first two seasons, he scored the tying goal in the 72nd minute against McMaster last weekend.
 
Brock
 
F Arsen Platis – The first-year forward scored Brock's lone goal of opening weekend, on a penalty kick against Guelph to give the Badgers the upset victory.
 
D Eric Bradey – The second-year defender was the team's third-leading scorer last season with two goals in 15 games.
 
Windsor
 
F Leighton Speechley-Price – Scored two goals five minutes apart in the 3-0 win over Brock last weekend.
 
M Jamar Redhead – The rookie midfielder scored the lone goal in Saturday's win over Guelph for the first goal of his career.
