York University Lions soccer player
Michael Cox and tennis player
Nikki Carnovale were named York's male and female athletes of the week, respectively, for the period ending Sept. 27.
Cox, a finance and business economics student from Calgary, scored two goals and assisted on the third to lead the Lions to a 3-1 victory over the Western Mustangs on Sunday afternoon.
The fourth-year striker potted his first in the 23
rd minute after stealing the ball from the goalkeeper and tapping it into the net, and he added his second in the 74
th minute when he converted on a breakaway. He also assisted on
Jonathan Lao's game winner in the 54
th minute and tallied six shots in total for the game, including three that were saved. One day earlier, he led all players with eight shots, including two on goal, in a 1-0 loss to the Windsor Lancers.
Cox is the OUA leader with 43 shots in eight games and he is tied for fifth in conference scoring with five goals.
Carnovale, a kinesiology and health science student from Woodbridge, Ont., swept both of her singles matches in convincing fashion and added a victory in doubles to lead the Lions to a pair of wins over Toronto and McGill this past weekend.
The rookie, who plays out of the top spot for the defending OUA champions, dropped just three games in her singles match against the Varsity Blues, winning 6-0, 6-3, and also teamed with
Heather Hills to win the top doubles match 8-2 in a 7-0 sweep of last year's OUA bronze medallists. The next day she was again dominant, winning her singles match 6-1, 6-1 over the Martlets as part of a 6-1 team victory.
Carnovale is 3-1 in both singles and doubles to start her career with the Lions, and her team has now won 15 straight regular-season ties against OUA opponents dating back to September 2013.
Both teams will be in action again this week. The men's soccer team will travel to Waterloo, Ont., on Thursday evening (Oct. 1) to face the Laurier Golden Hawks and then will face the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday (Oct. 4), while the women's tennis team will host the McMaster Marauders and Montreal Carabins at the Tennis Canada Courts on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
York's athlete of the week awards are presented by York University Food Services, and all recipients will receive a $25 YU-card.
