The York University Lions men's hockey team snapped the Waterloo Warriors' OUA-best eight-game winning streak on Friday night (Jan. 22) with a 2-1 victory at Columbia Icefield in Waterloo, Ont.
With the win, the Lions still hold the top spot in the competitive OUA West standings with a 13-6-3 record and 29 points in 22 games played, while the Warriors fell to 12-9-0 on the year with their first loss in nine contests.
The first period remained goalless, but the Lions were quick to give themselves a lead as soon as they took the ice in the second period. Executing off of a power play at 1:21,
Shayne Rover (Newmarket, Ont.) and
Tyler Mort (Keswick, Ont.) found
Mitch VanTeeling (Brandon, Man.) in a scoring position to tuck the puck away to make it 1-0 for the Lions, the only goal of the frame.
In the third period Rover and Mort were back at it again to assist another Lions goal. At 9:30
Colton Vannucci (High River, Alta.) was at the receiving end of their passes to make it 2-0.
At 14:04 the Warriors narrowed the score to 2-1, but it wasn't enough to stop the Lions from taking the game 2-1 for the win. Colin Behenna was credited the goal, while Stephen Silas and Mike Moffat claimed the assists.
In net,
Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) made 21 saves for his 11
th win of the year, while Waterloo's Mike Morrison saved 19 of the 21 shots sent his way.
