The York University Lions men's basketball team was defeated by a narrow score of 72-70 against the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Goldring Centre on Friday afternoon (Jan. 8.).
 
Both teams were neck-and-neck throughout the game however after Toronto edged out the Lions in the first quarter by one point (19-18) and the third quarter by three points (20-17), the Varsity Blues were able to scrape by with the overall 72-70 win.
 
Varsity Blues Devin Johnson led his team with 24 points and shot 100 per cent from the free throw line with seven points. He also grabbed eight points from the field and caught seven rebounds.
 
Shane Reader (Toronto) played a well-rounded game for the Lions, leading with 17 points and seven assists. Tommy Hobbs (Anchorage, Alaska) also tallied an impressive 16 points, sinking seven from the field, one from the three-point line, and one free throw. He also hustled to grab 10 rebounds.
 
Lions Nathan Culbreath (Kingston, Ont.) and Gene Spagnuolo (Maple, Ont.) also contributed seven points each to the final score.
 
Overall the Lions had a better field goal and three-point field percentage than the Varsity Blues. They tallied more rebounds, assists, second chance points and bench points, but it wasn't enough to edge out a win to improve their record on the year.
 
On Wednesday (Jan. 13) the Lions will look to grab their first win of the new year against the Ryerson Rams. The fixture will take place at Mattamy Athletic Centre at 8pm.
