The York University Lions women's hockey team was defeated in overtime 1-0 by the No. 1 nationally-ranked Guelph Gryphons on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 9) at the Gryphon Centre Arena.
Â
The Lions held in tough against the first-place Gryphons through three periods of play, but 4:43 into in the extra frame the OUA's top goal scorer, Averi Nooren, broke through the Lions defence and beat
Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) to give the Gryphons their 11
th win on the season.
Â
The Gryphons were firing from all angles on Saturday afternoon but could not beat Lee, as she faced 18 shots combined through two periods of play. In the third period the Lions defence shut the door on the Gryphon attack and allowed only three shots on the Lions netminder.
Â
Despite the loss to the nation's top team, the Lions played a competitive game by shutting down one of the most explosive offenses in the CIS. The Lions now sit in the middle of the pack in the OUA standings with a record of 2-3-6-2, and they will look to get back into the win column on Saturday (Jan. 16) when the Queen's Gaels come to Canlan Ice Sports. Puck drop is set for 2pm.
