Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | By Joey Ricottone

LIONS COMEBACK FALLS JUST SHORT IN LOSS TO GOLDEN HAWKS

The York University Lions men's hockey team stormed the ice on Saturday night (Oct. 8) at the Waterloo Rec Centre to face off against the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo, Ont., and came up just short with a 4-3 result in favour of the Hawks.

Laurier took a 4-0 lead early in the third period but the Lions scored three straight to narrow the gap to a single goal. However, that was as close as they would get to fall to 0-2 on the season. The Hawks improved to 1-1.

The game opened up with an early rally by the Golden Hawks as they scored two goals in the first period by the stick of Danny Hanlon. The second period ended with only Laurier lighting up the scored board after Will Cook scored an unassisted short handed goal for a 3-0 Hawks lead.

Laurier opened up the third period with their fourth and final goal of the game. From their they would have to fend off a persistent Lions squad. York's late rally began when Colton Vannucci (High River, Alta.) scored off of precision passes from Kyle Campbell (Halifax) and Steven Janes (Etobicoke, Ont.). Campbell made his way onto the score sheet once again when he added a goal to the scoreboard with the assist from Nick Zottl (Sarnia, Ont.).

The Lions battled it out until the very last minute of the game as they scored their third goal of the period with two minutes left. The final goal was set up by Trevor Petersen (Thornhill, Ont.) and Daniel Nikandrov (Richmond Hill, Ont.) as they assisted  Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.) for his second of the season.

The Lions' next game will take place on Friday (Oct. 14) when they host the Toronto Varsity Blues in their 2016-17 home opener. Puck drop is schedule for 7pm at Canlan Ice Sports.
