LIONS TWICE COME BACK TO DEFEAT GRYPHONS IN BIG OUA WEST TILT

The No. 3 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's soccer team continued its undefeated streak on Wednesday night (Oct. 12) as they twice rallied back from a deficit against the No. 7  Guelph Gryphons to win 4-2 at Alumni Field.

The Lions were facing adversity early as the Gryphons came out of the gate aggressive with a goal from Tomasz Skublak at just six minutes into the contest for an early 1-0 for the visitors.

The Lions would respond a 20 minutes later in the first half as Cristian Cavallini (Woodbridge, Ont.) found Milan Beader (Oakville, Ont.) for a goal to tie the match up. The Gryphons would come back aggressive once again in the 39th minute as Jace Kotsopoulos scored to put the Gryphons back on top with a 2-1 lead and they carried that advantage into halftime.

Trailing to their closest division rivals heading into the second half, the Lions showed their grit and much more as they stood firm defensively until Beader scored his second goal of the game off of an assist from Matt Arnone (Woodbridge, Ont.) to tie the match once again.

In the 83rd minute the Lions finally took their first lead of the game on a dazzling corner kick from Jonathan Lao (Unionville, Ont.) that found the inside of the net. Three minutes later, Dena Iezady (Richmond Hill, Ont.) scored for the Lions to put them ahead by two goals. The second half offensive surge was too much for the Gryphons to respond to as the Lions held on for the win.

The win, combined with a loss by the OUA East leading Ryerson Rams, now leaves the Lions as the only undefeated team in the conference. The Lions moved to 11-0-2 on the season with 35 points and they maintain their place atop the OUA West Division, now with a six-point cushion over the second-place Gryphons. Guelph dropped to 9-2-2 with 29 points, still 10 points clear of the rest of the field.

The Lions' next contest will take place on Sunday (Oct. 16) as they will try to attain their 12th win of the season against the Brock Badgers. The match will take place at Alumni Field with a 3:15pm start time.
