The No. 4 nationally-ranked York University Lions women's soccer team took the pitch against the Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday night (Oct. 12) as they returned home to Alumni Field and suffered their first loss of the season by a score of 1-0.
Â
The Lions battled it out for two full halves and seemed to be gridlocked defensively. On the offensive side of the ball York was relentless with 13 shots and four shots on goal. After 89 minutes of grinding it seemed as if the match would be sent to extra time, but right in the 90
th minute of play Guelph's Victoria Hinchcliffe scored a goal to push the Gryphons past the Lions.Â
Â
With tonight's loss the Lions fall to 9-1-3 on the season with 30 points. The hiccup will not affect the Lions' place in the standings, however, as they still maintain the top spot in the OUA West Division and have a three-point lead on the second-place Gryphons, who improved to 8-2-3 with 27 points.
Â
The Lions' next game will take place on Sunday (Oct. 16) when they look to rebound from their first loss of the season by taking on the Brock Badgers. The match will take place in Lions' territory at Alumni Field with a 1pm start time.
