The York University Lions football team was defeated by the No. 8 nationally-ranked McMaster Marauders by a score of 64-2 in their home finale at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 15).
Â
The Marauders scored a touchdown on their opening drive and never looked back from there, putting up 582 yards of offence and scoring six offensive touchdowns. They also had a pair on special teams, with an 85-yard punt return major by Mitch Garland in the first quarter and a 63-yard return in the fourth quarter by Aaron Baker.
Â
York's only points came on a McMaster conceded safety in the opening quarter.
Â
The Lions' usual high-octane offence struggled to move the ball against the Marauders. Quarterback
Brett Hunchak (Calgary) went 12-of-20 for 106 yards before leaving the game with an injury. His replacement, rookie
Matt Krason (Brantford, Ont.), was 10-of-19 for 82 yards.
Â
Rookie receiver
Alex Daley (Mississauga, Ont.) had a strong game, picking up 39 yards on four catches, as well as 146 yards on seven kick-off returns and 73 yards on six punt returns.
Â
McMaster running back Chris Pezzetta rushed for 162 yards on 14 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns, and Dominic Mandalfino added 138 yards on 16 touches and had one touchdown. Quarterback Asher Hastings went 16-of-24 for 207 yards and competed passes to eight different receivers, including scoring majors to Danny Vandervoort and Max Cameron.
Â
The loss dropped the Lions into a three-way tie with Guelph, Windsor and Toronto for seventh in the OUA standings with a 2-5 record, while the Marauders are tied with Western and Laurier for top spot in the conference at 6-1.
Â
Up next for the Lions is the season finale against the Gryphons in Guelph, Ont., next Saturday afternoon (Oct. 22). Kick-off is set for 1pm.
