The No. 4 nationally-ranked York University Lions women's soccer team was defeated by a score of 1-0 by the Windsor Lancers on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 22) at Alumni Field and missed out on a chance to clinch the top spot in the OUA West Division.
Â
The Lions remained tied for first place with the Western Mustangs with 33 points apiece. The two squads will meet on the final day of the regular season with the top spot up for grabs, and the Lions can finish ahead of the Mustangs with a win or a tie as they hold the tiebreaker.
Â
A second-place finish would still secure a first-round bye while falling to third place, which can still happen as the Gryphons are only two points back, will mean a first-round game on Wednesday.
Â
The Lions dominated the game from start to finish, outshooting the Lancers 22-12. But Windsor goalkeeper Kristina Brooks made 10 saves and midfielder Paiten Stephens found the back of the net in the 94
th minute to steal the three points just as time was about to expire.
Â
Windsor improved to 8-1-6 for 30 points on the season and is now just one back of the third-place Guelph Gryphons in the OUA West standings.
Â
While the Lions and Mustangs battle for first place – the game will be played at Alumni Field on Sunday (Oct. 23) beginning at 1pm – the Gryphons and Lancers will face off in Guelph, Ont., at the same time to sort out the rest of the playoff seeding.
