York University Lions men's soccer player
Eddie Lay scored the lone goal of the game to lead his team to a 1-0 victory over the Windsor Lancers in their match-up at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 22).
Â
The Lions had already clinched the top spot in the OUA West Division prior to this weekend's games and, with Saturday's win, improved to 13-0-2 for 41 points. The Lancers, who are battling the Waterloo Warriors for the final playoff berth in the division, are now 4-7-4 and sit two points ahead of the Warriors for the last spot.
Â
Both goalies were busy in the contest as York goalkeeper
Andrew D'Souza (Mississauga, Ont.) made six saves and his counterpart, Kyle Vizirakis, stopped eight balls and allowed the one goal.
Â
After a scoreless first half, the Lions wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the second when Lay (Courtice, Ont.) found the back of the net in the 49
th minute with an assist to defender
Daniel Gogarty (Scarborough, Ont.).
Â
That was all the stingy York defence would need as the rest of the game played out without a goal and the Lions continued their unbeaten season with their 13
th victory.
Â
The Lions have one more game in the regular season, against the Western Mustangs on Sunday (Oct. 23) at 3:15pm, before the playoffs begin. They have a first-round bye and will host the lowest remaining seed in the OUA West next Sunday, Oct. 30.
