The York University Lions field hockey team posted a 4-0 victory over the Queen's Gaels on Sunday morning (Oct. 30) to finish in fifth place at the OUA championships in London, Ont.
The Lions were seeded third heading into the championship but suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat in penalty strokes to the host Western Mustangs in the quarter-finals on Friday to fall into the consolation round. The Lions reached the fifth-place game with a 3-0 win over the McGill Martlets in the consolation semifinals on Saturday.
On Sunday against the Gaels, the Lions scored once in the first half and three more times in the second to earn the lopsided victory.
Sara Vollmerhausen (Newmarket, Ont.) opened the scoring on a corner in the 26
th minute and the Lions took their 1-0 lead into halftime.
Rookie
Natalie Maw (Scarborough, Ont.) added to the lead in the 48
th minute, and just before the end of the game OUA all-star defender
Rebecca Titus (Scarborough, Ont.) and
Michelle Per (Port Moody, B.C.) scored one minute apart to build an insurmountable lead and take the victory.
In Saturday's win over the Martlets, Titus opened the scoring on a corner for a 1-0 lead in the 21
st minute.
Another OUA all-star,
Mikhaela Slavin (Pickering, Ont.), found the back of the net just before the end of the half for a 2-0 lead, and
Ravneet Kalkat (Mississauga, Ont.) rounded out the scoring in the 66
th minute.
After a scoreless 70 minutes on Friday, the quarter-final game against the Mustangs went to a penalty shootout to decide who would move on to the medal round. After five shooters the score was still tied as Titus and Western's Tamara Evans each tallied a goal for their team but no one else was able to.
In sudden death penalty strokes, both Titus and Evans went first for their respective teams, with Evans scoring to push the Mustangs ahead and on to victory.
The Toronto Varsity Blues won their third straight OUA championship with a 3-2 victory over the Guelph Gryphons in the final. The Mustangs finished in third place by defeating the Waterloo Warriors in the bronze-medal game.
