The York University Lions women's hockey team was defeated by a score of 4-2 by the Laurentian Voyageurs in OUA action at Canlan Ice Sports on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 29).
The Voyageurs have now won three straight and improved their record to 3-0-1-0, while the Lions dropped to 1-1-3-0 with the loss.
Laurentian opened the scoring at 6:45 of the first period on a goal by Myla McCormick, with an assist to Samanthan Morell, and carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The second period was where most of the action happened as the two teams combined to score four times. The Lions got things going at 7:03 when rookie
Avery Reeves (Mount Forest, Ont.) scored the first goal of her career to even the score at 1-1.
However, less than two minutes later the Voyageurs pulled ahead again with a goal from Emma Leger.
York team captain
Amy Locke (Toronto) again pulled the Lions even at 15:52 with an assist from
Chelsea Tucker (Alliston, Ont.), but again the Lions were unable to keep the game tied for very long as the Voyageurs scored less than one minute later, from Ellery Veerman, to take a 3-2 lead into the second intermission.
Less than three minutes into the final frame, Elissa Bertuzzi put the puck past York goaltender
Lauren Dubie (London, Ont.) on a power play to stretch Laurentian's lead to two goals, and the Voyageurs held on down the stretch to claim the victory.
The Lions will return to action again on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 30) when they face the first-place Nipissing Lakers at Canlan Ice Sports. Puck drop is scheduled for 2pm.
