GOLDEN HAWKS CRUISE TO BIG WIN OVER LIONS

The York University Lions women's basketball team played their second game in as many days on Saturday night (Nov. 19) when the Laurier Golden Hawks travelled to the Tait McKenzie Centre and posted an 87-57 win over the hosts.

As the ball was tipped off the Lions would look to set the tone in the opening quarter. Fifth-year centre Shauney Fischer (Wallaceburg, Ont.) played stellar in the opening period of play as she dropped five points from the field. However, solid defensive play by the Golden Hawks would limit York to only 12 points and the quarter would end with a score of 26-12.

In the second the Lions did a much better job of restricting the Hawks offensively as Laurier would only end up scoring 15. York would match the Hawks 15 with 15 of their own. This was thanks to the Lions efficient free throw shooting as they went 11-14 from the line in the second quarter. The first half ended with a score of 41-27 for the Golden Hawks.

The Lions again stayed close to the Golden Hawks in the third quarter thanks to strong play from Katrina Collins-Samuels (Hamilton, Ont.), but the Hawks maintained their advantage and led 57-41 heading into the final frame.

In the final quarter of play the Golden Hawks would jump out to a heavy lead that the Lions were unable to recover from and they rolled to the victory.

Fischer led the way for the Lions with a double-double, putting up 13 points and 12 rebonds on the night. Collins-Samuels also had 13 points and added six rebounds, four steals and one assist.

Laurier forward Kaitlyn Schenck had a huge night with 30 points, five rebounds, six steals and three assists.

With the loss the Lions now fall to 0-3 on the season. Their next game will take place on Saturday (Nov. 26) when the Lakehead Thunderwolves try to defend their home court in Thunder Bay, Ont. The Lions will return home on Friday, Dec. 2 when the Algoma Thunderbirds travel to the Tait McKenzie Centre for a game beginning at 6pm.
