York University Lions women's hockey goaltender
Eva Hall stood on her head on Thursday night to lead her team to a 4-3 victory over the Ryerson Rams at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Â
The Rams fired 43 shots on Hall (Main-A-Dieu, N.S.), including 17 each in the second and third periods, but the three goals she allowed were not enough for the Rams to claim the win.
Â
The victory also ended a seven-game losing streak by the Lions and they are now 2-1-6-3 in the OUA standings. The Rams fell to 3-1-4-2 with the loss.
Â
The Lions controlled most of the first period, outshooting the Rams 11-9 and scoring the period's only goal, a power play tally by rookie defender
Taylor Davison (Oakville, Ont.) at 14:23 of the frame to give her team a 1-0 lead.
Â
Midway through the second the Lions stretched their lead to two when
Dana Somerville (Hockley, Ont.) notched her second of the season at 10:56. But less than four minutes later, the Rams got themselves on the board on a goal by Alyssa Connolly to make it 2-1 heading into the second intermission.
Â
The Rams outshot the Lions 17-7 in the period.
Â
Just two minutes into the third period the Rams tied the game off the stick off Karli Nummikoski, but the Lions got their lead back only 40 seconds later when team captain
Amy Locke (Toronto) scored at 2:39 for a 3-2 advantage.
Â
Ryerson again equalled the scoring, at 8:31 by Lauren Nicholson, but the Lions finally put the game away for good 90 seconds later on
Justine Treadwell's (Huntsville, Ont.) fourth goal of the season. Again the Rams topped the Lions in shots, 17-9, but Hall was there to shut the door.
Â
Locke finished the game with a goal and an assist, while her sister,
Erin Locke (Toronto) also had a multi-point night with a pair of assists.
Â
The Lions will be back in action on home ice on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 26) when they welcome the Toronto Varsity Blues to Canlan Ice Sports for a 2pm puck drop.
