The York University Lions men's basketball team dropped a tough one on Saturday night (Nov. 26) to the Lakehead Thunderwolves by a score of 79-75. The Thunderwolves edged out the Lions late in the fourth quarter to steal the win at the Thunderdome in Thunder Bay, Ont.
Â
In the opening quarter of the game, the Lions hit four three pointers from three different players.
Jayden Frederick (Scarborough, Ont.) hit two while
Nidun Chandrakumar (Scarborough, Ont.) and
Nana Adu-Poku (North York, Ont.) hit one each. The deep ball has continued to be a successful shot for the Lions early on in the season and, after some successful shot selection and great defensive play, the Lions entered the second quarter with a one-point lead as the scoreboard read 16-15.
Â
In the second quarter the Thunderwolves responded as they hit five three point shots in the quarter. The Lions did their best to keep up with the surging Thunderwolves by bringing the ball into the key and attacking the hole aggressively. Chandrakumar played aggressively inside as he scored five of his 11 points in the quarter.
Â
After an offensive power up by Lakehead, the Thunderwolves entered the half with a 42-37 lead.
Â
After losing their lead in the second quarter, the Lions charged back and regained the lead half way through the third. This was accomplished with help from
Ammar Hassan's (London, Ont.) three straight points to make the score 49-48 for the Lions. York would not be able to keep up to the Thunderwolves' pace in the quarter, however, and the period would end with Lakehead leading 63-56.
Â
In the fourth quarter the closest that the Lions were able to bridge the gap was three points. Every time they cut the lead to low single digits the Thunderwolves would find a new way to put points on the board, and as time expired the scoreboard read 79-75 for Lakehead, handing the Lions a tough road loss.
Â
The Lions now move to 2-2 on the season. Their next game will take place on Friday (Dec. 2) when the Algoma Thunderbirds travel to the Tait McKenzie Centre for a game beginning at 8pm.
