The York University Lions men's hockey team lost to their cross town rival the University of Toronto Varsity Blues by a score of 4-1 on Saturday night (Feb. 13) at Varsity Arena.
The game consisted of 82 combined penalty minutes with multiple game misconducts for both sides. The power play units were utilized at their full capacity on Saturday evening, which resulted in all five goals being scored on the odd man advantage.
The Blues Patrick Marsh opened the scoring five minutes into the opening period on the power play notching his 14
th of the season. Marsh finished the game with four points as he assisted on all the Blues goals. The Lions were rewarded with a power play of their own in the second period, during which
Mark Cross (Strasbourg, Sask.) received a pass from
Shayne Rover (New Market, Ont.) which he fired passed Andrew Hunt to tie the game up at one goal apiece.
Seconds after the Lion equalizer, the Varsity Blues retaliated with a late go ahead goal. Max Flanagan potted a puck passed Lions back up goaltender
Mitch Maraschiello (Buffalo, N.Y.) who was making a late season appearance between the pipes for the Lions.
The remainder of Saturday's matchup was controlled by U of T as they added two more goals in the third period. The first goal was scored by Mathew Campagna at the 3:30 mark and the second coming moments later from Flanagan.
The Lions finished the regular season with a record of 16-7-5 which was tops in the OUA West, and the Toronto Varsity Blues ended their 2015/16 campaign with a sub .500 record of 11-15-2. The Lions will now shift their focus to the OUA playoffs which are right around the corner.
