Returning to the Tait McKenzie Centre after four weeks spent on the road, the York University men's volleyball team upset the No. 10 nationally-ranked Waterloo Warriors by a perfect 3-0 score on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 14).
Currently the Lions (8-11) stand in the seventh position in the OUA Standings and the Warriors are tied in fifth place with the Western Mustangs.
It was a tight first set that had the teams fighting point for point.
Arthur Szwarc (Toronto) was a threat in all areas of the court while
Alexander Duncan-Thibault (Scarborough, Ont.) spiked in bullets from the middle of the front line.
Thanks to two crucial kills from
Nicolas Pirnat (Ottawa, Ont.) the Lions were able to take the first set in a 26-24 victory.
The Lions carried their momentum into the second set and claimed a second win with a 25-22 score. Setter
Logan Mend (Naramata, B.C.) was a key component to the Lions success, feeding balls along the front line and even nailed in a powerful kill of his own.
The Lions dominated the third set and secured a 25-15 victory to end the game early in three sets. The front line continued to play a solid game, along with
Jules Muhawe (Orleans, Ont.) who made an acrobatic dig near the end of play.
For the Lions, Szwarc led in points with 18.5, 11 kills, and nine blocks. Pirnat tallied 13.5 points and 9 kills, and Duncan-Thibault had 10.5 points with eight kills. All three Lions also had one service ace each while Mend had 29 assists.
On the other end Braden Cok and Aiden Simone tied with 14 points each and Greg Simone had 10 points. Gibson Graham helped the team with 33 assists.
