On Friday, Feb. 19 the York University women's basketball team pulled away with a 67-56 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds at George Leach Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

Coming out of the gates with a 22-12 lead by the end of the first quarter, the Lions kept a steady lead throughout the game and Algoma couldn't close the gap in time to deny York the win.

Thunderbirds Laura Meadows had a game high of 19 points with five field goals, nine free throws, and five rebounds. Lions
Shauney Fischer (Wallaceburg, Ont.) followed with 13 points on 6-10 shooting from the field and also contributed with seven rebounds.

Katrina Collins-Samuels (Hamilton, Ont.) and
Nina Guzina (Toronto) also had solid nights for the Lions. Both ladies tallied four field goals, while Collins-Samuels sank four buckets from the free throw line and Guzina sank three three-pointers. Collins-Samuels finished with 12 points while Guzina grabbed 11.

Tied with eight points for the Lions were
Sandra Nagowska (Peterborough, Ont.) and
Ishanaa Seupersadsingh (Markham, Ont.). Nagowska was 3-8 from the field and chipped in with six rebounds, while Seupersadsingh was perfect from the free throw line, scoring all six of her six free throw opportunities.

Next week the Lion's season will come to a close as they finish off their regular season with back-to-back home games hosted at the Tait McKenzie Centre. The first game will be at 6pm on Friday (Feb. 26) against the Toronto Varsity Blues.
