On Saturday evening the York University women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a 67-53 loss against the No. 4 Ryerson Rams at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
Â
The Rams managed to go ahead in the first quarter with an 18-14 lead over the Lions. Graduating Senior
Emma Thompson (London, Ont.) and
Shauney Fischer (Wallaceburg, Ont.) came up big with two memorable jump shots each, but didn't falter the Rams' momentum as they led going into the second quarter.
Â
In the second quarter, the Rams kept the pressure on and went into half time with a 29-21 lead.
Sandra Nagowska (Peterborough, Ont.) had a great play midway through the quarter, twisting and turning in the paint to grab two points on a layup. Thompson was also sharp on the defensive end with a steal of her own.
Â
The Rams switched up their play in the third quarter with some high-pressure defense, but the Lions adjusted well.
Katrina Collins-Samuels (Hamilton, Ont.) finished a sequence with a jump shot after the ball was circulated between every Lions player on the court. She grabbed a total of six points from the paint in the third quarter alone.
Â
Ishanna Seupersadsingh (Markham, Ont.) also sank a solid three-pointer and Fischer stood strong to grab several rebounds from under the basket, however the Rams were still able to secure a 46-36 lead to head into the final quarter of the season.
Â
In the fourth quarter, Seupersadingh had a solo effort from mid-court after stealing the ball from a Rams player and sinking a layup. Nagowska also fed
Taylor McAlpine (Huntsville, Ont.) with a sneaky pass for a well-executed jump shot.
Â
Thompson and
Nina Guzina (Toronto) also tucked away a three-pointer each, but the No. 4 Rams broke free with 14 points and ended the match in a 67-53 win in their favour.
Â
Fischer, Seupersadsingh, and Collins-Samuels were the stat leaders for the Lions. Fischer finished with 10 points from five field goals and seven rebounds, and Seupersadsingh and Collins-Samuels had the same stats with nine points, four field goals, and one free throw each.
Â
For the Rams, Sofia Paska led with 20 points, followed by Mariah Nunes led with 11 points, and Cara Tiemens had nine points on three three-pointers.
Â
With the loss, the Lions conclude their 2015-16 season, however the Rams' (16-3) post-season competition has just begun as they advance to the OUA quarterfinal taking place on Saturday, Mar. 5. The Lions will be back on the court next fall for the 2016-17 campaign, with the majority of the roster returning and a strong 2016 recruiting class joining the Lions family.
