The York University Lions men's hockey team won in dramatic fashion defeating the Brock Badgers in a shootout 1-0 on Saturday night (Feb. 6) at Canlan Ice Sports.
Through 60 minutes of play neither team could put the puck in the back of the net, and after four on four and three on three overtime the game was sent into the skills competition to decide the winner.
Although the Lions didn't crack the score sheet in regulation they dominated play in both regulation and overtime and had a bountiful amount of scoring chances throughout. The stellar play of Brock goalie Real Cormier was a sight to be seen. Cormier turned aside 58 Lion shots in the loss, and was far and away the Badgers best player on the night.Â
In the opposite crease was Lions starting goaltender
Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) was solid with 26 saves en route to the shutout win.
In the shoot out both squads went through six skaters and out of the twelve combined only one player managed to squeak one across the goal line. After finesse didn't work it only seemed fitting that the next man out would be the hulking forward
Justin Larson (Buckhorn, Ont.) who stepped up and clinched the Lions 16
th win on the season.
The Lions record after Saturday's big win stands at 16-6-3 which is tops in the OUA West standings. The Brock Badgers were handed their seventh overtime loss on the season and fall to 6-13-7.
The Lions are back in action Feb. 12 when they travel to Windsor to take on 12-10-3 Lancers squad at 7pm.
