LIONS FACE GOLDEN HAWKS IN OUA GAME OF THE WEEK

The York University Lions football team faces a big challenge in Week 2 when the squad travels to Waterloo, Ont., to face the No. 10 nationally-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks at University Stadium on Labour Day.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30pm and fans can catch all the action online, streaming live on OUA.tv and RadioLaurier.com.

The Lions opened the season with a huge 57-13 victory over the Waterloo Warriors last Sunday to begin the year 1-0, and they will look to carry that momentum into Monday's match-up against the Golden Hawks. The game promises to be a tougher one, however, as Laurier is one of the top-ranked teams in the country and is also 1-0 after a Week 1 win over Queen's.

The contest will pit York's offensive weapons against a staunch defence on Laurier's side. The Lions put up 586 yards in Week 1, second only to Western, while Laurier allowed the fewest in the OUA at just 266.

York second-year quarterback Brett Hunchak (Calgary) was named the OUA and CIS offensive player of the week after throwing for 331 yards and five touchdowns and completing passes to eight different receivers. The running game was also strong with four players rushing for more than 30 yards and the two-headed monster of reigning OUA rookie of the year Jesse Amankwaa (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Kayden Johnson (Kerrobert, Sask.) combining for 139 yards on 21 carries.

At the other end of the spectrum, Laurier took down Queen's by a 37-18 score thanks to a defence that forced five turnovers and had nine sacks from six different players. They were led by all-Canadian defensive back Godfrey Oneyka, who returned an interception for a touchdown, forced a fumble on the ensuing kick-off and added 4.5 tackles and one pass break-up to be named the OUA and CIS defensive player of the week.

Laurier quarterback Julien John made his first start since 2013 and looked rusty, throwing for just 158 yards and four interceptions on the afternoon. He also had a pair of touchdown passes.

The Lions last defeated the Golden Hawks in 2013 when they posted a 33-20 victory in their first game on their new turf field at Alumni Field (then York Stadium). Laurier won the most recent match-up last year, emerging victorious by a 38-21 score also at York.

After Monday's contest the Lions have a short week before returning to action at Alumni Field on Saturday, Sept. 10 against the visiting Windsor Lancers at 1pm.
