The No. 1 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's soccer team took down the Laurier Golden Hawks by a score of 3-1 in its home opener at Alumni Field on Saturday (Sept. 3).
With the win, the Lions remain undefeated on the season at 3-0-0 while the Golden Hawks are still looking for their first win at 0-2-1.
The Lions opened the scoring in the 24
th minute on a goal by
Cristian Cavallini (Woodbridge, Ont.), the first of his career.
Maurizio Ragone (North York, Ont.) was credited with the assist.
In the 40
th minute the Golden Hawks tied it on a tally by Gurjinder Garcha, but just before the end of the half the Lions took the lead again when fifth-year midfielder
Dena Iezady (Richmond Hill, Ont.) scored his first of the season in the 44
th minute with an assist to
Jonathan Lao (Unionville, Ont.).
The Lions added to their lead in the 85
th minute when rookie
Steve Kloutsouniotis (Markham, Ont.) netted the first of his career for the final goal of the game.
Next up for the Lions is a road game against the rival McMaster Marauders in Hamilton, Ont., at Ron Joyce Stadium on Wednesday evening (Sept. 7) at 8:15pm.
