Fifth-year striker
Nour Ghoneim scored a hat trick to lead the No. 5 nationally-ranked York University Lions women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors at Alumni Field on Thursday night (Sept. 8).
Â
The Lions stretched their unbeaten streak to five games to begin the season and are the first team in the OUA West to reach that mark. The Warriors are still winless, falling to 0-3-1.
Â
Christina Morelli (Markham, Ont.), a third-year striker who is tied for second in OUA scoring, added to her total by recording the first goal of the contest just four minutes after the opening whistle when she tapped in a cross from
Ashley Nater (Pickering, Ont.).
Â
The Lions dominated play for much of the contest, and in the 35
th minute Ghoneim scored her first of three goals with an assist to
Kiyani Johnson (Markham, Ont.).
Â
She wasn't done there, however, as she found the back of the net again four minutes later to give the Lions a 2-0 lead heading into the break, and she added her third in the 76
th minute to round out the scoring.
Â
Marilyn Grammenopoulos (Whitby, Ont.) and
Sia Papadopoulos (Maple, Ont.) earned assists on Ghoneim's other goals.
Â
Ghoneim, last year's CIS player of the year, is the OUA leading scorer with 11 goals in just five games, nearly double the next highest total of six.
Â
After three games in six days, the Lions will be off until next weekend, when they host the McMaster Marauders at Alumni Field on Saturday, Sept. 17 beginning at 1pm.
