The York University Lions women's volleyball team let a 2-1 advantage slip away on Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 loss to the Ryerson Rams at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
The Rams took the first set 25-21 and led early in the second set, but the Lions came roaring back to take the set 25-23 and level the match.
For the second set in a row, the two squads were tied 16-16 in the third before the Lions scored five of the next six points to pull ahead and ultimately win the set 25-19. Up one point in the fourth set at 5-4, the Rams went on a run that saw them score 13 of the next 14 points to pull ahead 17-5 and all but put the set away. It ended with a score of 25-13.
It was the Lions who jumped out to an early lead in the deciding set and led 5-2, but the Rams then scored six straight points to turn a three-point deficit into a three-point lead at 8-5. The Lions closed it to one on two occasions but could not get any closer and the Rams held on to take the set 15-11.
Heather Setka (Winnipeg) led the way for the Lions with 17 points on 15 kills, one service ace and one block, and she also added nine digs.
Celeste Witzell (Kitchener, Ont.) finished with 16 points on 11 kills, four blocks and one service ace.
Ryerson's leading scorer was Theanna Vernon with 17.5 points on 13 kills, two service aces and 2.5 blocks.
The Lions fell to 5-4 on the season and are tied with the Nipissing Lakers for third place in the OUA East Division, while the Rams are alone in second with a 7-3 record.
The Lions will be back in action on Sunday when they return to home court at the Tait McKenzie Centre to face the Trent Excalibur. The match is set to begin at 2pm.
