The York University Lions men's hockey team was narrowly defeated by a score of 1-0 by the Windsor Lancers at South Windsor Arena on Saturday night.
The Lions dominated for much of the game, controlling possession and getting numerous scoring opportunities, but they could not get the puck past Windsor goaltender Kris Joyce. He made 37 saves, including 16 in the third period alone when the Lions desperately tried to find the back of the net.
At the other end of the ice, rookie goaltender
Mack Shields (Saskatoon, Sask.) turned away 22 of the 23 shots he faced, with his only blip coming at 13:07 of the first period when Eric Palazzolo got one past him for a 1-0 lead the Lancers carried to the end of the game.
The Lions pulled Shields with 90 seconds remaining for the extra attacker but still could not beat Joyce.
The loss drops the Lions to 13-6-2 and they remain comfortably in second place in the OUA West with 28 points. The Lancers improved to 11-9-2 and are now tied with the Laurier Golden Hawks for third place in the standings.
The Lions will be back on home ice next weekend for a pair of games at Canlan Ice Sports. Up first are the Queen's Gaels on Friday, followed by the UOIT Ridgebacks on Saturday. Both games will begin at 7pm.
