Hot off of their thrilling last-second victory against the No. 10 nationally-ranked McMaster Marauders, the York University Lions men's basketball team went after its second straight upset win but were defeated by a score of 82-64 by the No. 8 Brock Badgers at Bob Davis Gymnasium in St. Catharines, Ont., on Saturday night.
There were some solid individual performances in the game, most notably from
Jayden Frederick (Scarborough, Ont.)
Nidun Chandrakumar (Scarborough, Ont.).
An exceptional first half of shooting for the Lions helped keep the game close against an aggressive Badgers team. York shot 50% on field goals, hitting 14-of-28 shots in the half.
Frederick did his part as he recorded 16 points and six rebounds. However, the Badgers Johneil Simpson remained a pest for the Lions with his game-leading 22 points. Simpson's performance kept the Badgers in the game even with the Lions lights out shooting. At the end of the first half the game stood at a 37-37 tie.
The second half provided many more obstacles for the Lions. With a now more aggressive Brock defence forcing less optimal shot selection for their opponent, the Lions field goal percentage would drop to only 24.1%. A bright spot in the Lions' second half was Chandrakumar, who recorded 12 points, three rebounds and seven assists, but his solid play would not be enough as the Lions would only score 27 points to Brock's 45 in the second half and the Badgers pulled away.
With the loss the Lions now hold a 4-8 record, while the Badgers improved to 8-4. The Lions' next game will take place on Friday (Jan. 27) when the Laurentian Voyageurs travel to the Tait McKenzie Centre for a game beginning at 8pm.
