The York University Lions women's basketball team captured a huge four-point victory on Saturday night (Jan. 21) as they edged out the home team Brock Badgers by a score of 52-48 at Bob Davis Gymnasium.
Â
The Lions' electrifying guard
Katrina Collins-Samuels (Hamilton, Ont.) played a major role in the team's victory. The most significant portion of her dominant play took place in the first half. Collins-Samuels recorded eight points, two rebounds and three assists in the opening half of the game, she would go on to record a team high 12 points. A strong second quarter of shooting helped propel the Lions into a leading position as they entered the third quarter with a 31-28 advantage.
Â
As the third quarter began to pass it was evident that both teams were emphasizing a strong defensive presence. The games lowest scoring quarter only saw 19 points scored, 11 from Brock and 8 from York.
Ishanaa Seupersadsingh (Markham, Ont.) and
Khara Keane (Scarborough, Ont.) played key roles in the second half low-scoring affair. Keane recorded five points and two rebounds in the half while Seupersadsingh recorded four points, three rebounds and two assists, but the Badgers tied the game heading into the final frame.
Â
The two squads traded baskets back and forth in the fourth and with 1:34 left in the quarter the Lions' lead stood at only one point with a score of 49-48. Needing a big basket, Seupersadsingh commandeered the ball off of an unassuming Badger and hit a jump shot to push the lead to three. This basket would ice the game and put the Lions back in the win column.
Â
The Lions improved to 3-9 with the win, while the Badgers are now 4-8 with the loss.
Â
The Lions' next game will take place on Friday (Jan. 27) when the Laurentian Voyageurs travel to the Tait Mckenzie Centre to face a hot York squad. Tip-off is set for 6pm.
